Extrinsic Curvature Embedding Diagrams
Embedding diagrams have been used extensively to visualize the properties of curved space in Relativity. We introduce a new kind of embedding diagram based on the extrinsic curvature (instead of the intrinsic curvature). Such an extrinsic curvature embedding diagram, when used together with the usual kind of intrinsic curvature embedding diagram, carries the information of how a surface is embe...
متن کامل(Bosonic)Mass Meets (Extrinsic)Curvature
In this paper we discuss the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking from the point view of vacuum pairs, considered as ground states of a Yang-MillsHiggs gauge theory. We treat a vacuum as a section in an appropriate bundle that is naturally associated with a minimum of a (general) Higgs potential. Such a vacuum spontaneously breaks the underlying gauge symmetry if the invariance group of t...
متن کاملOn the Scalar Curvature of Einstein Manifolds
We show that there are high-dimensional smooth compact manifolds which admit pairs of Einstein metrics for which the scalar curvatures have opposite signs. These are counter-examples to a conjecture considered by Besse [6, p. 19]. The proof hinges on showing that the Barlow surface has small deformations with ample canonical line bundle.
متن کاملComplete surfaces with negative extrinsic curvature
N. V. Efimov [Efi64] proved that there is no complete, smooth surface in R with uniformly negative curvature. We extend this to isometric immersions in a 3-manifold with pinched curvature: if M has sectional curvature between two constants K2 and K3, then there exists K1 < min(K2, 0) such that M contains no smooth, complete immersed surface with curvature below K1. Optimal values of K1 are dete...
متن کاملExtrinsic Curvature Dependence of Nielsen-olesen Strings
It is shown how to treat the degrees of freedom of Nielsen-Olesen vortices in the 3+ 1dimensional U(1) higgs model by a collective coordinate method. In the london limit, where the higgs mass becomes infinite, the gauge and goldstone degrees of freedom are integrated out, resulting in the vortex world-sheet action. Introducing an ultraviolet cut-off mimics the effect of finite higgs mass. This ...
